Our cruise on the Seabourn Legend started on a lovely warm Autumn day in Civitavecchia. This was our first experience on an ultra-luxury ship, having previously cruised several years ago on lines such as Vista & P&O.

The welcome onto the ship was fabulous with no waiting at all. Our hand baggage was carried on for us, and champagne offered immediately in the lounge. The cabin was much larger than we had experienced before with a fully stocked mini bar, separate lounge area, walk-in wardrobe etc. The only slight gripe was the shower which was poorly designed.

If you haven't travelled with Seabourn before, it is difficult to imagine just how attentive the service is. Your personal preferences are immediately remembered and drinks, snacks, canapes are offered regularly. Despite the fact that there is no tipping, and everything is included in the price, the staff seem highly motivated and keen to ensure that you are continually delighted.

Throughout the cruise, the food was excellent, ranging from informal breakfasts and lunches, to the formal multi-course evening meal. We travelled with our daughter and son-in-law, and between us have varied tastes in food. However the menus offered contained an excellent balance of traditional and innovative food, excellently cooked. We were on the ship for twenty-one days and never tired of the food, always eagerly anticipating the next meal. The food was sufficiently light of touch to ensure that our waistlines didn't suffer too much.

The entertainment was limited, however on a small ship this was to be expected, and was not a particularly important factor for us.

What really made for an excellent cruise was the outstanding service, wonderful food, a well chosen itinerary, and a small ship where you never had to queue.
